1755 – Samuel Johnson’s “A Dictionary of the English Language” was published in London.
1817 – Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc founded the first US public school for the deaf, Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons in Hartford, CT. The school has since been renamed the American School for the Deaf.
